COMING AND GOING: PARIS (METRO), WASHINGTON (METRO)

by Peter D'Agostino

Date: 1977-1979 Total Running Time: 13:25

Paris (Metro) (5:20) deals with aspects of ambiguity and confusion felt by a passenger on the Paris Metro. The sped-up stop-framed imagery shakily monitors the undifferentiated mass in the routine of the Paris Metro, as voice-over presents the etymology of the word metro

This source of confusion is felt by the individual as one's body, time and everyday activities are subjected to institutionalized mechanisms of control. This seemingly unlimited access "starts at home," spreads through the "metropolis," and extends beyond our planet, as spectator becomes an object of representation. Washington (Metro) (8:05) was originally conceived and presented as a three channel video installation at the L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station. It includes footage shot from the station's closed-circuit surveillance cameras, a modified "travelogue" of Washington, D.C., and a historical chronology of the correspondence between George Washington and Pierre L'Enfant the architect of the Federal City's master plan.
