The Kitchen mourns the untimely loss of our friend, choreographer Stanley Love. As a catalytic force in the downtown scene for nearly thirty years, Love and his Stanley Love Performance Group impacted so many lives through their ecstatic, insistent, and radical practice of dancing together.
Hailing from Iowa, Love came to New York to attend The Juilliard School. He founded Stanley Love Performance Group in 1992 and first performed at The Kitchen as part of the Dance and Process program in December 1995. He later premiered an evening-length work entitled coven with an x here in 1998. In the press release for coven, Stanley stated, “One of my neuroses in creating a dance is finding a choice that connects ten levels of meaning at once.” Recently, SLPG made a show-stopping appearance at our 2016 Spring Gala honoring Charles Atlas and Dara Birnbaum. In September 2017, we were thrilled to present SLPG’s epic Brings Swings, Sings Chimes Rings Wings, Flings Zingahlings-Spirit Party Things on the occasion of the company’s twenty-fifth anniversary. SLPG then returned to take part in Charles Atlas’s The Kitchen Follies in May 2018.
In a 2017 interview with Movement Research Performance Journal (Issue #50), Love said, “Dance is spirit…We inspire the community to believe. We’re inspiration leaders.” And on his company and practice, he stated, “The work is all of us together…We are the village. We have the widest range of dancers. Wide range of dance textures. Meaning experience. I don’t like the word ‘non-dancer’ anymore because someone who dances is a dancer. All you have to do to dance is dance. It’s that simple. You don’t have to have a degree. You don’t need permission. All you have to do is dance. Period. That’s dancing. Dancing is dancing.”
In recent years, Love often would turn up at our offices just to say hello with a smile and a hug. We will miss him greatly, and we send our deepest condolences to all those who were touched by his radiant spirit and his singular art.
