No Longer Showing.

Marguerite Hemmings guides an evening of looking at relationships through movement and sound and media. What is a reparative performance practice that un-oppresses and un-does, or simply looks anew, at relationships that are in need of examining,--i.e. audience-performer; institution-artist; whiteness-everything else? How can the improvisatory practices inside of dance and music, especially of the African Diaspora, point to one way of reparations, or repairing, or healing the ways we relate with one another? Audience members will be asked to join the circle and participate in guided and unguided improv exercises with sound and movement facilitators. Issa jam.

This performance is presented as part of The Racial Imaginary Institute: On Whiteness. For more information about the exhibition and other programs please see our website.

Dear Friends, Over the years, I’ve drawn inspiration time and again from something The Kitchen’s co-founder, artist Steina Vasulka, once told me about how this singular organization emerged during the 1970s. “It wasn’t by plan,” she said. “At least not at the start. Instead, it came to be sim...Read On
