From May 12 to June 3, 2000, The Kitchen presented a collection of new video work and video documentation by Cuba-based artists. The full artist list included: Raúl Cordero, Luisa Marisy, René de Jesús Peña Gonzalez, Tania Bruguera, Cuba/Canada Intervideo, Felipe Dulzaides, and Juan C. Alom and Cirenaica Moreira. The exhibition was co-curated by Christina Yang, Curator of Visual Art/Media at the time, and Betti-Sue Hertz, independent curator, in collaboration with Fundación Ludwig de Cuba, a nonprofit organization based in La Habana aimed at supporting Cuban artists. The works in the exhibition interrogated themes of political divide, urban life, and personal identity, all under the umbrella of cross-cultural exchange.
Vistas Nuevas: Recent Video from Cuba was preceded by a panel discussion entitled “The Politics and Economy of Access: Cuba,” occurring on May 10, 2000 as part of the third installment of The Kitchen’s former annual Art and Technology Symposia titled “Global Intersections: New Collaborative Possibilities.” The panel featured artists, curators, and critics, including Helmo Hernández, president of Fundación Ludwig de Cuba.
