We are pleased to partner with fellow non-profit Printed Matter for a special sale of select vintage posters produced by The Kitchen between 1976 and 1991. Presented on occasion of our 50th anniversary, this offering of ephemeral works traces The Kitchen’s rich schedule of programs and performances in this era, encompassing experimental music, video, film, performance art, dance and theater. The posters available in the sale represent events by artists such as Kathy Acker, Ambitious Lovers, Laurie Anderson, Glenn Branca, John Cage, Fab Five Freddy, and Diamanda Galas, and historic group endeavors such as the 1979 festival New Music, New York, The Kitchen’s tenth anniversary benefit event Aluminum Nights in 1981, and more. The poster sale is augmented by an in-store display at Printed Matter in Chelsea curated by The Kitchen’s 2020–2021 Curatorial Fellow Kathy Cho, featuring a selection of posters and ephemera drawn from The Kitchen’s archive.
This joint initiative by Printed Matter and The Kitchen highlights our organizations’ shared commitment to artist-designed print materials. From its first decade, The Kitchen recognized the forms of posters, flyers, and programming calendars as both a means of promotion and sites of artistic expression. The pieces available are stylistically diverse, representing the many ways The Kitchen collaborated with artists on the design and imagery of printed materials. Many of these posters were pasted up around town as a primary form of event advertisement.
Posters offered at deeply discounted prices for the duration of the sale with proceeds benefiting both non-profit organizations.
